Case Study title: Multi-Touch Table Development at the Getty

Brief Abstract:

Introducing new, innovative technologies to a development team has many benefits. It’s exciting. It’s exhilarating. A good production team will rise to the challenge and design a wonderful experience. A great production team will exceed all expectations and champion innovation.

Introducing the multi-touch table at the Getty Center yielded other interesting results beyond the scope of our "way-finding" goals. It impacted how the Web Group communicates with other departments and each other. It changed aspects of our production model and made it more agile. It enabled us to have a more sophisticated understanding of our visitors' experience. It also has given us a better understanding of how to connect our onsite and virtual experiences. This case study will review the production and implementation of the use of the multi-touch table at the Getty.

When I purchased the multi-touch table in the summer of 2009, our original intent was to help with "way-finding" at the Getty Center. I knew that this new technology would inspire my team to think creatively and to think about how technology impacts a visitor's experience. However, introducing the multi-touch table yielded other interesting results as well. Beyond the scope of our "way-finding" goals, the table had a larger impact on the Web Group. It impacted how we communicate with other departments and each other. It changed aspects of our production model and made it more agile. It enabled us to have a more sophisticated understanding of our visitors' experience. It also has given us a better understanding of how to connect our onsite and virtual experiences. This one project had a much broader impact than its original mandate. It has taught me that using innovative technologies can bring innovation to the team itself. This case study will review the production and implementation of the use of the multi-touch table at the Getty.
