Case study title: Collections Online at Museum Victoria

Abstract:

Why would Museum Victoria seek to publish information about its collections online? The modern world is online – we seek to inform ourselves by looking online, we consume information and media online and we interact with our social networks there too. By presenting our collections online, alongside our other extensive offerings, Museum Victoria’s goal is to meet the community’s expectation that our collection information will be available online.

This case study will take a quick look at the result of our History and Technology collection coming online earlier in the year. http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections

Session Info:

  • Type: Case Study Showcase
  • Keywords: collection,web,mobile
  • Relevance: I expect many of the attendees present, or intend to present, collections on their websites. Our museum has taken many years to prepare our data and get to a point where we feel confident in sharing it with the public. Our process and outcome may be useful to others who are planning collection access online.

Presenter:

Jonny Brownbill, Manager, Online Development, Museum Victoria

Bio:

Jonny Brownbill is the Manager of Online Development at Museum Victoria. He leads a team of web specialists who produce high quality, award winning websites and applications which provide access to the Museum’s collections, research and activities. Over the past 12 years Jonny has been involved in taking the organisation’s web presence from a simple brochure site to a rich and complex information system.  He and his team were instrumental in producing an online strategy which has been highly regarded in cultural circles. During this period Jonny also participated in the development of the Museum’s new visual identity and oversaw a major website systems and content review and redevelopment.
