Abstract:

The British Museum and BBC’s A History of the World Project (www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld) is a unique and fascinating partnership – at heart a 100-part series broadcast on BBC Radio 4 – each covering an object at the British Museum to tell a “History of the World in 100 objects.” The online component was conceived from the start as an integral part of the wider project – allowing visualisation of the objects, audio downloads and transcripts of the radio programmes, but also to extend it – by inviting contributions from hundreds of other museums across the UK and the public. This paper will present the project – how it was conceived and designed, looking at the inter-relationships between the three strands of the project - broadcast TV and radio, online, and events across the UK at the partner Museum venues, and then look in more detail at the digital offer in relation to the conference theme “User-generated and museum content: quality, trust, reputation and relevance”.
